There is a red-shouldered hawk sitting in a tree outside my window right now. It's been there for about 45 minutes - a very patient bird! I walked out and took some photos, but I've just got a "regular" digital camera, so with snow on the ground and a grey sky it didn't snap well.
I have a neighbor who raises trout on his property. He said he has to grow about a thousand extra each year to satisfy the hawks, osprey, and owls!

What a great neighbor to share with the foul. I just love hawks. Living in Albuquerque we get lots of red tails and sparrow hawks but nothing more exotic. Out in the country side on occasion we will see Eagles and Falcons. Thanks for sharing you pictures. Brrrr looks cold at your neck of the woods too.

Every once in a while we'll get a hawk in our yard, trying to get the little birdies that I feed. I've even had one crash into our living room window, trying to catch one. It's really hard for me not to try and shoo it away, but I know it's the great circle of life and I shouldn't mess with it!
that's amazing your post was on a hawk today. As I pulled out of my driveway this morning my husband pointed out a very very puffed up hawk, (beautiful) sitting on a branch about 3 feet from the ground which is unusual since we have dogs (inside at the time). Last year they nested and raised their one baby in our back yard, way way way up. The nest is HUGE.
And we just found out they are back! adding on to the nest, so here we go again! They will be crying to each other all spring. what a racket, but watching the fledgling learn to fly was awesome and scary. It was perching on things way too low, and we had to keep my dogs in until it could get the energy and gumption to get higher as its parents called and called. What an adventure. Looks like a young hawk. We have several hanging around. They get the little birdies at our feeder...I keep our tiny cat inside when they are out...he practically is small as a rat...
