I FEEL LIKE COMPLAINING, BUT NOT ABOUT WEEDS

In Massachusetts, too! I normally don't complain about the weather, because July and August are always hot and humid and you learn to accept that. But, wait! It's only the beginning of June. I went outside for 15 minutes at 11:30 a.m. and almost "died". The temp is 79F/26C but, it's so humid, it feels like 100F/37C! I hate humidity. The Farmer's Almanac says that it's going to be a hot summer due to El Nina. (There, I'm done complaining . . . I think.)

Do you ever stop to look closely at the weeds in your yard? What actually is a weed, anyway?

weed 1 (wd)n.1.
a. A plant considered undesirable, unattractive, or troublesome, especially one growing where it is not wanted, as in a garden.
b. Rank growth of such plants.

Well, there you have it. But most weeds, to me, are not as such. Many "weeds" on my property have become permanent fixtures in my flower garden! A few examples are milkweed, goldenrod, field daisies, ditch lilies, marguerite daisies, birdsfoot trefoil, butter & eggs, kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate, blue-eyed grass, yellow star grass, etc.

Now, this beautiful Foxglove is technically a weed, because it is "growing where it is not wanted" - up against the tire of the old plow truck! It will get transplanted later this year; a graduation from a weed to a flower.

Here are some true weeds that have beautiful flowers, and just happen to be some of my favorites in the yard also! ~

Rabbitfoot Clover ~

Jewel Weed or Touch-Me-Not

Pearlwort or Irish Moss

Slender Speedwell or Creeping Veronica

Harebell

Venus' Looking Glass
(not my photo)

Crown Vetch

I could go on and on! I just LOVE my weeds! I have a book called Weeds of the Northeast, which is an awesome book for identifying weeds and, I swear, I have at least 80% of the weeds in that book on my one acre property! How did they all get there? I dunno. Probably the wind or bird droppings and such. But, I'm glad they landed in my yard! (Except for the poison ivy)

Your weeds are beautiful. Guess one man's weeds is another persons garden. I am so envious of your foxglove as I can't get them to grow even when I plant them. Thanks for sharing.

I love your weeds too! I'm headed out to the garden now (under my umbrella - STILL raining) and blow kisses to my weeds. Might take me all afternoon because after all the rain we've had there are plenty of them!! Did you find any red weeds in that book? Have a great weekend dear friend!!

Love,

We live not far from you and are constantly trying to rid our gardens of weeds. Silly us! Much easier to just accept them and enjoy them as you do! However, we don't seem to have the lovely flowering varieties that you do.

And, yes, the humidity is stifling.

Out here, we even water the weeds. ANYTHING green gets some water!!!

Susan, In Ohio they call it natural landscaping. Sometimes prairie gardening. It used to be wildflowers. LoL...I've been in style for years

Yet another example of how beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
