REDNESDAY AND RED CHRISTMAS BOOKS

WOW! I just noticed that this is my 400th post! Amazing!





Well, that's enough hoopla for one day, lol!

This past Friday night Teen and I went to our town library's semi-annual book sale. It was extra special this time because a local old-book store in town closed and donated all its' inventory to the library sale. One large room was devoted to these books alone - talk about a heady experience! There were a few dozen tables lined with books and boxes upon boxes under each table. It was like being a kid in a candy store, I didn't know where to begin!

I was thrilled to find four vintage/antique Christmas books, one of which I'd been wanting for the past year - and here they are:

First is a group shot ~


This brown book, The Birds' Xmas Carol by Kate Douglas Wiggin, is the one I've had my eye on, but even the cheap ones were a wee bit too pricey on eBay. First copyrighted in 1886, this is the 1916 edition - very good condition!

Next is By The Christmas Fire by Samuel McCord Crothers. Aren't the words in a cross awesome? This book is 1908 which surprised me because it's in near-perfect condition, and I was guessing 50's or 60's until I read the copyright. The only defect is the faded spine.

Now this book is more modern, from 1951. It's called The Book of Christmas - Illustrations by Seymour. This is the Cuneo Press's Tenth Annual Christmas Book and the preface says, " We hope that you will enjoy reading of the Christmas customs of England as they were practiced when this book was first published in 1837."

And, last is a not old (1991) Christmas murder mystery set in Connecticut. Should be a fun read!

I can't wait to get started on these in the next month or so! Other books I picked up were the Audubon Field Guide to Trees, HTML 4 for Dummies, At Home in the Garden (The Musings of a Victorian Gardener), The Gardener's Eye and Other Essays, and this . . .

The Children in the Little Old Red House by Amanda M. Douglas, 1912. The last chapter is called A Wedding and A Christmas, so it fits right in with my Christmas books!

And what did Teen get? Comic books, a tiny 2" x 3" English/German translation book (red!), two books from The Belgariad (fantasy) series, and these three:

Chinese Wit Wisdom and Written Characters, 1944; cassette tapes of the original radio broadcasts of Superman vs. Atom Man; and The Klingon Dictionary! She has such an eclectic taste in reading material, and she always comes up with such good stuff!
Now, can any of you come up with something more interesting than a Klingon dictionary today? LOL!
